A Day in the Life
Sample Daily Schedule
Learning doesn’t always fit neatly into rigid time blocks—and we lean into that. While our schedule provides structure, we prioritize deep engagement, curiosity, and mastery over the clock. Some moments call for extended exploration, while others wrap up naturally. Flexibility is part of how we honor each child’s learning journey.
8:15-8:40: Kickstart the Day, Community Meeting 📆
As students arrive, they ease into the morning with engaging activities—whether it’s exploring an interest, tackling a fun challenge, or getting individualized support for the day ahead before our community meeting which provides space for every child to be seen, known, and welcomed. This intentional start fosters curiosity, independence, and a smooth transition into learning.
8:40-10:15: Literacy Block 📕
Read alouds to support knowledge building followed by literacy centers where students work on individualized literacy goals based on science of reading and individual needs. This time may include teacher-led small group instruction, phonics activities and word work, writing, and tasks aligned with students current needs.
10:15-11:45: Math Block ➕
High-level theme introduced (ie addition) and then students practice math skills based on individualized needs. This time includes working directly with the teacher in a small group setting, using math manipulatives, playing math games, and working on their mastery-path tasks where students have tasks aligned with their current levels.
11:45-12:45: Lunch, Recess, Outdoor Play 🛝
12:45-1:15: Classroom Maintenance, Quiet Time 📖
Students have opportunities to do their classroom jobs, instilling a sense of ownership in their learning environment and a calming break to rest, read, and recharge
1:15-2:15: Enrichment: 🎵
Music: Rhythmic and movement-based learning, mastering coordination and listening skills through song or instrument practice.
Science: Hands-on experiments, LEGO Science, nature observations, integrating literacy or math where possible (e.g., recording scientific observations)
Art: Creative projects that encourage self-expression and link to literacy or math concepts (e.g., illustrating a story, creating patterns in art).
Physical Education: Age-appropriate fitness, exercise, and sports
2:15-3:15: Conundrums, Choice Time, Citizenship 💡
Supporting the development of, among other things, critical thinking, communication, and public speaking skills as students work through challenges with no “right” answer (ie town receives $50k grant, should it go to fixing potholes, supporting new businesses, improving schools, or something else)
Self-directed activities that allow students to explore personal interests like art, building, or sensory play. Stations provide reinforcement for literacy and math skills.
Depending on the day, this time will also be used for civics education.
3:15-3:30: Gratitude, Wrap up, Dismissal🤝
We end each day on a positive note, reflecting on wins, expressing gratitude, and setting intentions for tomorrow. This time helps students build a mindset of appreciation, connection, and continuous growth
